ABTRACT

On the second anniversary of the attack, on Oct. 9th 2021, video installations and projections in public spaces in Halle (Saale) display short, concise but not under-complex statements. Various thematic complexes such as the narrative of the lone perpetrator, the work of the police and the importance of the Halle attack court case being a detailed case with strong co-plaintiffs are broached by the projections. Hereby viewers are encouraged to question their previous beliefs regarding the attacks on the synagogue in Halle.

CONTEXT

In large parts of the public opinion in Halle (Saale), the anti-Semitic, racist, and misogynist attack of Oct. 9th, 2019, which cost two people their lives and left 62 people pleading for attempted murder, is understood as a terrible act of a mentally disturbed, socially isolated lone perpetrator. Investigating authorities, media coverage and the reasoning of Oberlandesgericht’s evaluation of the case co- and reproduce the narrative of the isolated case and “Einzeltätermythos”. Co-plaintiffs and activists in the field criticise the lacking contextualization of the attack as one link in a chain of violent anti-Semitic, racist and anti-feminist attacks and assaults in Germany and worldwide.
